Give ‘em Hell, Harry: ON THE SECOND AMENDMENT   Leave a comment

Don Quixote

A good friend, Richard Diamond (his real name with his permission) told me my chances of success in repealing the Second Amendment are about the same as “a snowball in Hell” and that I remind him of “Don Quixote tilting at windmills.” Nevertheless, he added, “I applaud your tenacity and determination to bring this topic to the attention of the general public.” Another friend, an ex-marine, advised me that the NRA is too strong. However, he believes that no civilian should own a gun except of the type that were made at the time the Second Amendment was passed. He added, “Don”t be discouraged, it is a fight worth fighting.” Others have confused my call to repeal the Second Amendment with an opposition to the right to own guns. For clarification, I am not advocating a constitutional amendment to ban gun ownership. I am advocating the repeal of the Second Amendment.

The NRA loudly protests its patriotism and its support of our Constitution. But perhaps this patriotic support is essentially support for guns. The gun lobby claims we need assault weapons to protect us from a tyrannical government. But our freedom to vote protects us from tyranny. So, we must use that vote. WRITE TO YOUR LEGISLATORS.

It is not hopeless. Australia successfully implemented gun control in 1996. We have changed the United States Constitution many times. The Temperance Movement successfully fought a powerful alcohol lobby; later we changed the Constitution again and repealed prohibition; we have ended slavery, we no longer count blacks as 3/5 of a person for the purpose of apportioning representatives to each state; women have acquired the right to vote.

Repeal the Second Amendment so that it will be legal to place infringements on the right to bear arms. We have placed infringements on the First Amendment right of free speech. One cannot yell “Fire” in a crowded theater or legally defame someone with libel or slander.

The Second Amendment is a Constitutional support used by the NRA and its merchants of death to make millions of dollars. Those using it to legitimize the right to bear arms seem to leave out the part about a “well regulated Militia” being the reason for the right to keep arms – because of the absence  – (at the time) of a standing army.  The Constitution was intended to be a living document. The Second Amendment is antiquated. It’s time for change.

I have placed several posts on gun control. If any of you believe in what I am trying to do, please write to your legislators. See how from my post, HOW TO COMMUNICATE WITH ALL YOUR ELECTED OFFICIALS AT ONE TIME:

One person cannot do this alone. I need your help. So please pass this on to others. It will also help, if you feel so inclined, to ‘like’ my facebook.

So for now, here comes another snowball from hell – or as Harry Truman said, “I don’t give them Hell. I just tell the truth about them and they think it’s Hell.”
